St. John's United Church of Christ

Delighting in God, Engaged in God's Purpose

STOP:  SPIRIT THINKING OPENS PASSION!!!

This is the theme title of a quarterly Interactive Bible Study.  I chose S.T.O.P. because when we allow ourselves to “stop” and “think” about the Word of God, I believe the Spirit can then unlock a new or renewed passion for the study of God’s Word and for the ministry that He gives us.

S.T.O.P  open to everyone – male, female, young, old - it doesn’t matter if you are versed in the Bible or a newbie!!!

All S.T.O.P sessions are on a Saturday from 9 – 3 with a lunch break from 11:30 to 12:15.  There is no fee but there will be a donation basket to help cover the lunch.

You will need to bring: a bible, a notebook, pens or pencils.

S.T.O.P. will be held:

March 10th – Theme: Baptism

June 9th – Theme: Forgiveness

September  8th – Theme: Healing

December  8th – Theme: Anointing

You do not have to attend each one, although that would be nice!!   Each session stands on it’s own.

Please sign up at least a week ahead of time so there is enough lunch available.  You can call St. John's church office at 937-3941 or sign up in the church office.

The Martinsburg Food Pantry is in need of the following items:

Cereal, tomatoe&vegetable soups, baked beans, carrots, mixed vegetables, instant potatoes, rice, juice, and paper products (toilet paper, paper towels and tissues).

UPCOMING EVENTS

ASH WEDNESDAY AND LENTEN SERVICES

Ash Wednesday is on February 22.  Communion and Ashes will be offered during the Service.

Service times for our Lenten series will be at 7PM.  The Theme this year is “Words that Last Forever!”   This series of services is based on Christ’s seven last words.   Christ had no epitaph.  Buried in a borrowed tomb, no words were emblazoned across his grave.  Instead, during the final hours of his life, Christ mapped out his way of suffering with seven famous last words – seven final phrases, remembered and recited throughout the ages.

Feb. 24 - Birthday Party at Homewood @ 2:30pm

Feb. 28 - Women's Fellowship

Feb. 29 - Lenten Service @ 7pm

Adult Sunday School Class

Beginning sometime this month, Pastor Mary will be teaching.

She will be using a Lenten Study:  “Christ in the Strangest Places.”

It is an in-depth study of Old Testament stories that highlight the fact that God revealed himself in the strangest of places and foreshadowed the coming of his Son to save us forever in unexpected ways and still comes in unexpected ways even today.

Come and Join us – There is room at the table for you

KITCHEN CLEANUP!!

It is that time again!!  A spring cleaning of the kitchen is in order.  So, come, one and all on Saturday,  February 25th at 9am.  Coffee and goodies will await all those willing to help.

Martinsburg Ministerium’s Pulpit Exchange

On March 4th, the pastors of the ministerium will be switching pulpits as a way of physically showing Christian Unity!!   Pastor Mary will be offering the Word at The Brethren In Christ Church that Sunday.  Filling the pulpit here will be Pastor Bob Detwiler from Diehl’s Crossroads Church of the Brethren.  Please keep all the pastors and churches in your prayers as they share together the Word of God from 1 Corinthians 15: 51-58.
