St. John's United Church of Christ
Delighting in God, Engaged in God's Purpose

The back of this shelf sitter reads as follows: "Prior to 1804, 14 families of German Reformed faith worshipped in a log church about 2 1/2 miles southwest of Martinsburg (G.W. Stonerook farm 1914). In 1804 Rev. John D. Aurandt encouraged them to locate in Martinsburg. He was their minister until 1831. The congregation met in a weather-boarded church, which stood beside the present church edifice on Julian St. In 1858 the new church was erected at a cost of $4,223.40. The bricks were made on the old Nicodemus place (Ken Russell farm 1954) near Fredericksburg. St. John's is the second oldest church in the Cove and was long known as the "Mother Church" because of its central location and wide influence in the area." This self sitter may be purchased for $15.00 by contacting Mrs. Judy Dodson at 814-793-4398.
